Baseball Saved Us

"Ken Mochizuki gives us Baseball Saved Us, a powerful account of life in a relocation center. To combat despair and depression, the inmates build a baseball field on unfriendly desert terrain, make uniforms out of mattress ticking and organize teams for young and old. Surrounded by armed guards and barbed wire, they play their hearts out. Dom Lee's moving scratchboard and oil illustrations, painted in warm earthen tones, help frame this story of hardship and hope (ages 6—10)."
