Make Sushi at HomeA Homeschool Activity for Hiromi's Hands by Lynne Barasch Activity by Anastasia Suen |
You can make your own sushi! Here is a recipe for norimaki You'll need: rice rice vinegar several vegetables dried seaweed (called nori) a pan to cook the rice a spatula, wooden spoon or rice paddle a measuring cup a colander a flat dish or mixing bowl a small fan (you can make one out of paper) a cutting board a mat (called a makisu) or a large sheet of wax paper an adult to help with the stove and the knife Note: Measurements for the recipe are contained in the links to follow First, make the rice. Some people add seasonings to the rice before it cooks. While the rice is steaming, wash and cut your vegetables into small strips. (Ask an adult to help you with the knife.) Place the vegetable slices near the mat or waxed paper. Put the nori on the mat, shiny side down. After the rice cooks, place it in a flat dish (or mixing bowl). Pour rice vinegar over the rice. Use a spatula to fold Spread the cooled rice on top of the nori. Make the pile of rice a quarter of an inch high. (Leave a half inch all around the edges.) Use your hand to make a line in the middle of the rice, and add the vegetable slices there. Now roll the mat to wrap the rice and vegetables inside the nori. After you've rolled it up, take it out of the mat and cut it into one inch slices. Before you eat your norimaki, take a digital photo to post it in our Photobucket album.
