Skype is a free, downloadable program that allows users to make voice and video calls over the internet. Video calls are a great way for authors and illustrators to visit schools and libraries without traveling—see our Virtual Author and Illustrator Visit Program for more information on scheduling virtual visits.
Below are instructions for getting set up with Skype. If you're at a school or library and have trouble installing or using Skype, please contact your IT department.
Are You Ready for Skype?
Because Skype transmits video over the web, some older computers or slower connections cannot use Skype effectively. Make sure your system meets these requirements:
| Windows Windows® 2000 (with DirectX 9.0 for video calls), XP, Vista or 7 At least a 1GHz processor 256 MB RAM Broadband internet connection Speakers—built-in or separate Microphone — built-in or separate Webcam — built in or separate |
|
| Mac Mac OS X v10.3.9 (Panther) or newer G4, G5 or Intel processor, 800 MHz or faster 512 MB RAM 100 MB free disk space on your hard drive Broadband internet connection Speakers—built-in or separate Microphone—built-in or separate Webcam—built in or separate (Download drivers if you are using an external webcam) |
Get Set Up
If you meet the above requirements, go to Skype's download page.
Click the green button that reads "Get Skype for OS X" or "Get Skype for Windows." Follow the instructions to install Skype on your computer. If you are unable to download or install, your IT department may have blocked these functions; contact them and ask for Skype to be installed or for the computer to be temporarily unblocked.
Once you've downloaded and installed Skype, open the program. Make sure that video is enabled:
| Windows Select Tools on the tool bar Click Options Click Video Settings Make sure that "Enable Skype Video" is selected. If your webcam is properly installed, your image should appear |
|
| Mac Select Skype on the tool bar Click Preferences on the drop-down menu Click the Video tab Make sure that "Enable Skype Video" is selected. If your webcam is properly installed, your image should appear |
If you're unable to make a call, your IT department may have blocked online communication programs. Contact them and ask them to temporarily unblock Skype.
You're Ready!
Once you're set up, contact us to set up a Virtual Author or Illustrator Visit. When a visit is scheduled, we'll also schedule a test call with Hannah Ehrlich at the LEE & LOW office and with the author or illustrator to ensure that the technology is working prior to the visit.
