Bird
Review
By Education Resource Center, University of Delaware
This verse novel is a gentle look at a young boy’s ability to cope with both his brother’s tragic spiral into drug–produced death and his beloved granddad’s subsequent death. . . . The author uses flashbacks as he recalls Marcus’ decline, including the day the family returned from church to find most of their belongings gone. The pain and devastation felt by the family now locking the door to keep Marcus out is clear. . . . Despite its somber premise, this is a book of hope for a young boy nicknamed Bird whose drawings may help give him the wings to fly one day.
