Children of Long Ago
Review
By Yana Rodgers, Rutgers Department of Women’s and Gender Studies
With this poignant collection of poetry, Lessie Jones Little has provided readers with a refreshing account of growing up as an African American child in the countryside during the early 1900s. Race and poverty presented big obstacles, but there were happy times also. It is those times of warmth and joy that the poet seeks to communicate, with beautiful illustrations by Jan Spivey Gilchrist.
