The eighth Dive into Reading book features a diverse cast of neighborhood friends. This time, Pablo takes the lead, organizing a trip to Coney Island and carefully mapping their route. They walk to the bus stop, take the bus to the subway, then ride the subway to Coney Island. The story guides the reader through the logistics of taking public transportation. It is a classic beginning reader, with three short chapters, strong pictorial support of text, a blend of phonetic and sight words, and plenty of repeating phrases. The final page explains how to create your own neighborhood map, extending the book’s STEM focus and emphasizing the theme that maps are fun. Digitally altered watercolor illustrations capture the kids’ emotions and add rich details such as Lily’s kitten purse, a community garden, and a woman in a hijab waiting for the subway. Hand this to newly independent readers who enjoy realistic stories, and use as an introduction to maps.
