Irena's Jars of Secrets
Review
By Jennifer Walsh
Through gorgeous illustrations and text, Vaughn’s picture book brings to life the true heroics of Irena Sendler. As a Polish Catholic woman during the time of Hitler’s fascist dictatorship, she helped to rescue and save over 2500 Jewish children from the Polish ghetto. For a woman to be that brave during war in the 40’s, shows compassion and courageousness. This is evident through both words and pictures in this book. Not only is this a great introduction (for children) into “doing the right thing” in times of trouble, but this would be a great book to read to middle schoolers to add to any Holocaust/Rescuer Unit.
