Little Melba and Her Big Trombone
Review
By St. Louis Post-Dispatch
"Little Melba and Her Big Trombone" by Katheryn Russell-Brown (Lee
& Low Books, 40 pages, $18.95; ages 6-10) is a joyful tribute to
musician Melba Doretta Liston. Russell-Brown emphasizes Liston’s
triumphs but also touches on her struggles against sexism and racism
throughout her career. The colorful illustrations by Frank Morrison use
strong diagonal lines that parallel the energy of the music and the time
period.
