Rent Party Jazz

Review
By Bayviews

(Bayviews, Association for Children’s Librarians) Without being maudlin, this is a touching story of Sonny’s determination to help his mother, a testament to the power of music, and a glimpse into the lives of African-Americans living in New Orleans during the Great Depression. The colorful and energetic acrylic illustrations beautifully portray the people and life of the French Quarter. An afterword provides more information on rent parties which were common in African-American neighborhoods during the 1920s and 1930s.
