Summer of the Mariposas
Review
By City Year Boston Blog
Despite the fantasy elements of the book, many young readers will be able to relate to the quarrels between the sisters and many of the other family issues that the author explores. Divorce, forgiveness, single parenting, and poverty are just some of the realistic challenges that the characters must face on their journey. . . . This book, published in October 2012, is ideal for both junior-high and high school readers. McCall seamlessly weaves Spanish words within the English text so it is perfect for bilingual students and students who are studying or interested in Spanish. Born in Mexico and raised in Texas, McCall was able to paint a vivid portrait of a Mexican-American family.
