I found myself incredibly moved by the imagery and sentiments conveyed through McCall’s words. . . .Under the Mesquite offers an example of how to not only survive, but to eventually thrive. An important symbol throughout the story is the mesquite tree. No matter how hard Mami tries, she can’t seem to get rid of the mesquite growing in her rose garden.”
