Description
Born in Philadelphia in 1766, James Forten witnessed the unfolding of a new and revolutionary idea. The thirteen colonies had declared war against British rule and wanted to start a new country based on freedom and equality for all. Inspired by the Black and Indigenous soldiers that enlisted, James was determined to join the fight too.
Soon after the colonies gained their independence, it became clear to James and many others that the new government did not intend to uphold the tenets of the Declaration of Independence. Undeterred, James devoted the rest of his life to mending America into the nation it had promised to be.
Educator and children’s book author, Kesha L. Grant brings to life the inspiring story of James Forten who was a Renaissance man–a soldier, entrepreneur, sail maker, and abolitionist. Coupled with dynamic illustrations by Anastasia Magliore Williams, this is a compelling story and reminder of our role as citizens to fight for a more perfect union.
