Thirty Years and Counting

In 1991, Lee & Low Books began with a simple mission: to publish beautiful books about everyone, for everyone.

Today, we are the largest and most trusted multicultural children’s book publisher in the United States and a leader in the movement for greater representation in publishing since its inception.

Our family-run, independent, and certified 100% Minority Owned Business Enterprise (MBE) produces award-winning, high-quality books for every age. Our list includes leveled books for beginning readers, picture books, early chapter books, middle grade, and young adult books, and a wide selection of bilingual and Spanish language titles.

Lee & Low is dedicated to promoting equity within the company and in the publishing industry at large. This commitment is reflected in the often-cited Diversity Baseline Survey, an ongoing study of demographics in the publishing industry, and in our writing contests for unpublished writers of color or Indigenous/Native writers: New Voices and New Visions.

Diversity Gap in Children's Books Infographic Releases

Release of The Diversity Gap in Children’s Books infographic on The Open Book Blog based on data from Cooperative Children’s Book Center’s diversity statistics. Its success prompts additional posts examining representation in the New York Times bestsellers list, film, theater, and television, and expands outside the media to US politics and the tech industry. Alarming similarities in the systemic lack of representation show up across these industries.

The First Diversity Baseline Survey Releases

Created and sponsored the Diversity Baseline Survey (DBS 1.0), the largest data study to measure diversity levels in the publishing workforce. The initial survey included three out of five “Big Five” publishers, major reviewers, as well as small and medium publishing houses. The results revealed a severe lack of diversity in the book publishing workforce, which sparked a renewed sense of urgency and channeling of resources toward recruitment and retention of diverse talent in the industry. DBS 1.0 results were published on January 26, 2016.

Presented Angel Award

Presented the Angel Award at The Carle Honors for “inspiring so many people with its dedication to multicultural books and to a new generation of artists and authors who offer children both mirrors and windows to the world.”

New Visions Is Sponsored By First Book and the NEA Foundation

Literacy nonprofit First Book and the NEA Foundation sponsors the publication of an additional debut novel by an author of color under the aegis of the New Visions Award. The resulting book, The Wind Called My Name by Mary Louise Sanchez, is published in 2018.

Testimonials

Don't just trust us — hear from others in the publishing industry talk about Lee & Low Books.

An Open Book Foundation

Lee & Low has been and continues to be committed to publishing diverse books that are windows and mirrors for young readers. Lee & Low understands that reading about people different from oneself is as important as seeing oneself in books.

National Education Association

Lee & Low Books is simply the best when it comes to publishing and promoting diversity in children’s literature. They are one of my top resources for excellent books, booklists, guides, and resources to recommend to educators and parents. And as passionate advocates for diversity in children’s literature and other fields, Lee & Low are models for the rest of us. They pave the way for new authors and illustrators covering all forms of diversity and they remind us to be vigilant in our own reading lives, not only for ourselves and our children, but for society at large.

Teaching for Change

Lee & Low plays a unique and valuable role in the publishing industry. Not only are they publishing new books, but they are also bringing back into print many of the gems from multicultural literature that have been unavailable for years. These titles were published at a time when children’s books had a stronger orientation to issues of race, class, and power than one typically sees in picture books today. Lee & Low is also conducting invaluable studies of diversity (or the lack of it) in the children’s book publishing industry. The studies serve as important exposés and call to action.
