Award-Winning Bilingual Books for Children

Children’s Book Press was the first independent press in the United States to focus on publishing children’s literature by and about people of color. Starting in 1975, Children’s Book Press promoted shared experiences of cultures that have been historically underrepresented or misrepresented in literature for children.

The list of notable titles published by CBP is extensive. Award winners include:
I see the rhythm (Coretta Scott Award Illustrator Award)
A Place Where Sunflowers Grow (Jane Addams Children’s Book Award)
A Movie in My Pillow/Una película en mi almohada (Américas Book Award)
and several Pura Belpré Award Honor winners:
Iguanas in the Snow and Other Winter Poems/Iguanas en la nieve y otros poemas de invierno
Family Pictures/Cuadros de familia
The Storyteller’s Candle/La velita de los cuentos
From the Bellybutton of the Moon and Other Summer Poems/Del ombligo de la luna y otros poemas de verano

“Over the course of many years directing Children’s Book Press, I was very happy to witness the flowering of Lee & Low as a major independent publisher of multicultural books for all our children. Quite simply, Lee & Low does innovative, courageous work. My heart rests easy in the knowledge that the legacy of Children’s Book Press will live on with Lee & Low.” —Harriet Rohmer, Founder, Children’s Book Press

In 2012, Children’s Book Press became an imprint of LEE & LOW BOOKS. The imprint continues to publish picture books featuring a wide range of diverse cultures, with an emphasis on bilingual English/Spanish titles. High-quality bilingual books help build a solid foundation to achieve literacy in any language while affirming and validating a child’s identity, culture, and home language. Through the CBP imprint of LEE & LOW BOOKS, Children’s Book Press’s important mission to promote bilingualism, literacy, and education lives on.
