…Mike, who is probably in second or third grade, has an especially close relationship with his grandmother. Their fondness for each other is effectively portrayed through dialogue and the time they spend cooking together. The soft pastel illustrations complement the warm family-oriented setting. This simple and tender story would be a good read-aloud, and could support units on multicultural awareness, economics and commerce, immigration, or regional studies.
