Etched in Clay
Review
By Cynthia Curtis
Andrea Chang uses poetic verse to tell the story of Dave, an African-American slave who became a talented potter. Etched in Clay: The Life of Dave, An Enslaved Potter and Poet is a biographical work that is well-researched and written with just enough imagination to capture the young reader’s interest. Through the use of a few words, Dave the potter, expressed his civil disobedience through, and in, his pottery by writing poems, words, and signing his name.
