Grandfather Counts

Review
By Dallas Morning News

Grandfathers can be cool, especially when they come to live with you from far-away places such as China. They are even cooler when they can teach you how to count in Chinese and how to make the Chinese characters, and you can teach them to write your American name. Helen, or Yin Hua, as her grandfather named her, is excited about her Gong Gong (say “goong-goong’s”) arrival. He will move into her newly painted room, she will move in with her little sister and they all will have many happy times together. Grandfather Counts sorts through the awkward moments and gaps between generations using numbers, the universal language, as the bridge.
