When the Horses Ride By

Review
By Plain Dealer

A few weeks ago I heard Eloise Greenfield recite her poetry from When the Horses Ride By: Children in the Times of War. Her voice and words were a potent testimony to the impact of war on its youngest victims. Greenfield writes simply, in the language of children, about wars throughout history, moving from ancient China and Egypt to the current war in Iraq. Jan Spivey Gilchrist contributes dramatic mixed-media collage illustrations. The collection appropriately begins with ‘Hold Fast to Dreams’ from Langston Hughes and ends with a note from the author encouraging children to do just that. A beautiful book to share.
